Food Delivery Services: How Do They Compare?

Whether you're craving a plate of pasta from your local Italian restaurant or an iced latte from the coffee shop down the street, these food delivery services allow you to enjoy delicious cuisine without having to leave the house.

The rise of food delivery services has been a godsend to anyone receiving home health care.  Eating delicious cuisine from your favorite restaurant doesn’t have to be a thing of the past just because you can’t go out.  From restaurant delivery services like Grubhub to specialty services like Goldbelly, you can enjoy fresh food from a variety of restaurants delivered to the comfort of your own home.  We’ll go over the best food delivery services and see how they compare in terms of price, delivery fees, and what they have to offer.

Grubhub

Grubhub is a food delivery service best known for its deals.  They also own Seamless, which is almost identical to Grubhub and offers many of the same benefits and features.  Grubhub provides special offers or discounts such as free delivery from a certain restaurant or a coupon for $3.00 off.  The app is easy to use, allowing you to search for restaurants based on factors like the type of cuisine, the delivery fee, rating, etc.

Grubhub is pretty widespread, with over 300,000 restaurants in 4,000 US cities featured on their platform.  There’s also an option to enter delivery instructions, where you can request contact-free delivery and designate an area where you’d like your food dropped off.

Delivery and Service Fees

Grubhub’s delivery fees depend on the restaurant, but they usually amount to less than $7.  Many restaurants do have order minimums, however, so you might find an additional $2 charge added to your order if it’s under a certain amount.  The service fees will also vary by restaurant, although these usually amount to around $3.

Subscription

Grubhub offers a premium subscription option called Grubhub+ that gives you free delivery and other perks for $9.99 a month.  You’ll get unlimited free delivery from eligible restaurants as well as 10% cash back for every $100 you spend on the app.  You can even test it out with a free two-week trial to see whether or not it’s a good fit.

DoorDash

DoorDash is relatively similar to Grubhub, with both apps featuring around 300,000 restaurants in 4,000 cities.  They also both allow you to search through restaurants based on different factors such as distance or delivery time.  The DoorDash app has a “Yum Score” that rates food quality and whether or not a restaurant delivers quickly, which is useful for people who want their food fresh and hot.

Delivery and Service Fees

Delivery fees vary by restaurant, but they usually range between $2-8.  Service fees also vary by restaurant, usually amounting to around $3.  Similar to Grubhub, you will find an extra charge for small orders if you’re under a certain amount.

Subscription

DoorDash offers a premium subscription service called DashPass.  For $9.99 a month, you’ll get zero delivery fees from select restaurants as well as zero delivery fees for orders over $12 from any restaurant.  DashPass also offers reduced service fees for orders over $12.

Postmates

Postmates is best known for its wide reach, as it operates in over 4,200 US cities and works with more than 500,000 restaurants.  It offers 24/7 service, so you can order at any time day or night as long as the place you’re ordering from is open.  You can search through the app by type of cuisine as well as by which restaurant will reach you the fastest, which is the most popular, and reviewer recommended restaurants.  Postmates also offers many great deals via email that can help reduce the delivery and service fees.  Whether you’re looking to order a meal, groceries, or alcohol, Postmates can deliver.

Delivery and Service Fees

Delivery fees usually range between $1-$10 based on the restaurant, and they can also increase during busy times.  Delivery fees are usually higher if the restaurant or business is not a Postmates Partner.  Service fees are also subject to inflation during busy times.

Subscription

Postmates has a subscription option that costs $10 a month or $100 a year.  This gives you free delivery for orders over $12, no surge pricing during busy times, and extra promotions and offers.

Uber Eats

Uber Eats works similarly to Uber in that it handily allows you to track where your driver is in real-time as they’re delivering your food.  It is integrated with the Uber app in some cities, making it even easier to use.  The Uber Eats app allows you to search by price, delivery fee, or dietary preferences.  The app works with over 320,000 restaurants, but it is only available in around 500 cities globally.

Delivery and Service Fees

Uber Eats delivery fees are usually less than $6, and they can increase during busy times.  Service fees will be 15% of your order subtotal, and there’s a $2-$3 minimum order fee for orders under $10.

Subscription

Uber Eats offers a premium service called Eats Pass for $9.99 a month.  This service offers unlimited free delivery, 5% off orders over $15, and special promos.

Goldbelly

Goldbelly stands apart from your standard food delivery service by delivering you specialty cuisine from all over the country.  Whether you’re interested in a Philly cheesesteak or Kansas City barbecue, you can order meals from far away to be delivered right to your door.  Goldbelly displays different categories of food on its page, from meal kits that feed 10 people to specialty cakes.

Delivery and Service Fees

Many of the restaurants on Goldbelly offer free shipping, but the food prices are usually inflated to incorporate the costs of shipping them such long distances.  However, you can find plenty of flash sales that help offset some of the cost.  Unlike the other apps, in which delivery time is usually less than an hour depending on the restaurant, Goldbelly usually delivers within two to three days.
